I tired to find the reason behind such project and why the Municipality of Damascus is keen on going on with this project. I got to know that they need to clear space around one the Shiia Mazar of Siti Roqia to generate money from visitors. I still think that what ever the reason the combination of old Damascus and it people as occupants make one structure which is The Old City. The City planner along the years have proved their failure with a lot of examples like souq sarooja, sooq alasrounia and sooq al kheja. They proved their inner impotent in solving any problem so far. People should work together to stop this tragedy and the have to raise their voices demanding from the municipality to give them answers and logical reasons to favor the project. People approval should be a deciding factor. They do not mind destroying another market, this time without even finding replacement to add to their chaotic planning. It makes me feel sorry for those who are going to suffer and they can’t raise a lawsuit to claim their rights. It reminds me with the sixties and nationalization of people properties which set the country 50 years back.

So how far along are they in this decision? I’m not too familiar with the place, what does it consist of? The letter says the World Heritage Foundation will meet in June to discuss the matter, will the area still be there then?

So stupid! I was so upset to read that in the news!
They say we should distinguish between antique and archealogical! What they want to clear out is just some old stuff…NOT of any archealogical importance…how LAME that is?
I wrote a post about this but didn’t get the chance to put it online…I will do that soon…we all have to do something about it..lets start a blogger campain!
