2009
When my evening was about to end, the countdown for the New Year back in Syria was about to begin. I called up my friend and we laughed heartily in the face of that dying old bitch. His plan for the turnover was to head for the bathrooms at 11:59 and take a shit that he’s been saving up all day, and then flush it down the drain with the rest of that year.

It’s absurd to think of life or time as anything but a continuum, but without these artificial breakpoints, that same life would become unbearable. The turn of a new year, a birthday, a season change or the sun rise of a new day may all be fake, but they give us the strength to dust up all the dirt and toughen up until the next breakpoint.
***
All I want from this next year is for Bob Dylan to stay alive until I finally get to see him live in March, and for the Azzuri to get their act together and win us another World Cup. Everything else can just make its way to hell, slowly!

May you all have a wonderful new year!

I’m not sure you got any of my messages with the networks being semi down on New Year’s eve, so in case you didn’t, here it goes again: I wish you a magnificent year, my dear Yazan!
I just got home from a brain-blocking party, which worked out pretty nicely until a few minutes ago. Right now the dancing, drinking and laughter of the past evening/ night are turning into tears exactly because the dusting off, the breakpoints and the dirt are a big mess I haven’t gotten around to yet. I truly hope that your continuum is in a better shape than mine.
You’re going to see Dylan, don’t worry too much about that. Lucky you btw. I’m still hoping to hear his “just like a woman” live one day and cry my eyes out while I’m at it. As for the world cup, I’m all for La Roja so yeah I’m not going to root for you and your Azzuri on this one ;-)
I definitely owe you, dear Yazan, but hmm, not here ;-)
Big hug!

I have to agree that the crap thing was a bit creative, but about your wishes for the new year, well, it sounds horrible. First of all, Bob Dylan should only be played in dark bars, where there isn’t much people and their to drunk to care. Secondly, the Azzuri team, you have to be either insane or a woman, and from your name I know you are not a female…

Happy New Shitless Year Dear Friend :-D
The most un-Italian thing I ever encountered in my life is Italian Football.
It is sooo shitty it’ll spoil everybody’s new year if they get anywhere past the first stage. May they lose miserably.
Bob Dylan is something to look forward to though. He’s too stoned to die. One day, he might get sober long enough and bites the dust

I know I said it more than once before, but I do love your writing, Yazan!
Happy new year..

Katia,
And to you too my dear!
It’s amazing how easy laughter and alcohol can turn into tears.
All day I tell myself that all I want to do is to get through the day.
All week I tell myself that all I want to do is to get through to the weekend.
But when it’s all said and done, all I can feel is another year wasted. I hate it, but that’s how it is.
La Roja can play, but they don’t have the nerves for the big league my friend. I will be rooting for them, just for you! ;)

Mohammad,
I am not a woman, as evident by my name and photo! I do root for the Azzuri, they play beautiful football and they play it well. They’re not predictable, nor showy, they play with the laid-backness of a true mediterranean. You have to enjoy Italian football they way you do with an espresso…

Abu Fares,
I find it rather funny that a self-declared fan of a team like the Gunners can actually find it in himself to criticize Italian football. Ma 3aleina, South Africa is near, and the water betkazzeb the diver. :)
Happy New Year dear friend!

Happy New Year, dear Yazan. I hope this year brings you some beauty somehow and that you’ll write about it when you see it. Don’t look too hard…it will find you, I’m sure. All the best.
